  • Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine the relationship between the characteristics of project managers and how emotional intelligence (EI) moderates the effect to project success in construction. EI has been linked to many research studies and has shown to improve performance, both for organizations and individuals alike (Shahnazari, Pourzolfaghar, & Mirza, 2017). Well-known researchers such as Goleman (1995) and Bar-On (2011) have extensively researched the topic of EI, job performance, and project success (PS); they have also linked the fundamentals of job satisfaction and longer job tenure. Research gaps exist, questioning if there is a relationship project characteristics (PC), the leadership style (LS), or if EI has a moderating effect to PS (Mathur, Jugdev, & Shing Fung, 2014; Wang, Wei, & Sun, 2014). The problem is the lack of information and research on project success and emotional intelligence traits in a critical find of construction and the leadership of its managers. The research questions were designed to evaluate and learn if there is a relationship between transformational and transactional LSs and characteristics of the project manager's (PM) experience while taking into consideration how EI relates to the PS. The data analysis was taken from certified construction PMs with a minimum five years of experience leading projects as a manager. The study will aim to find whether the characteristics (age, gender, education, or tenure) do or do not have a significant impact on the relationship between EI and PS.
